The Tradition Continues
Now in its eighth year, The Trabert Tennis Camp
returns to the prestigious campus of Stevenson
School in scenic
Pebble Beach,
California. Using the
same legendary
teaching methods
pioneered by former
Wimbledon, French
and U.S. Open
Champion Tony
Trabert, this tennis
tradition now continues
with former Pebble Beach Director of Tennis
Mike Trabert, who will teach and manage the camp
along with his wife and former Stevenson faculty
member, Dinny Trabert. There are two sessions for
boys and girls of all ability levels ages 10-17, for
Day and Resident Campers.
Our Spectacular Setting
Founded in 1954, Stevenson is one of the finest private
schools in the United States. With its location
on the famous 17-Mile
Drive in Pebble Beach
behind the guarded
gates of the pristine
Del Monte Forest,
Stevenson’s surroundings
are spectacular.
Easy to reach from
almost anywhere,
Stevenson is two hours south of San Francisco and
five hours north of Los Angeles. Shuttle busses from
San Francisco, and San Jose Airports take campers
to Monterey where we will pick up your child.
First-class Facilities
In addition to the eight
teaching courts used by
the camp, other amenities
on the Stevenson
campus include spacious
dormitories and common
areas, grassy athletic
fields, a swimming pool,
gymnasium, fullyequipped
weight room, a
ropes course and an auditorium for movies, talent
nights and camp dances. The professional
Stevenson kitchen staff employed during the school
year provides excellent food and assures you of delicious
and
nutritious
meals.
Tennis
Staff and Teaching Philosophy
We hire
only experienced
male
and female
instructors, many of whom are former or current college
players and coaches. Directors of Tennis from
various clubs are also on staff. In addition to teaching
assignments, staff members live in the dormitories
with the campers to insure compliance with
camp rules. Using the proven techniques taught to
him by his father, Tony Trabert, Mike and his staff
will provide first-rate instruction to all campers
regardless of ability. Whether
you are a beginner
or tournament
player, your stroke
production, overall
skills and understanding
of the
game will improve
at our camp.
Areas of emphasis
include high percentage
tennis, stroke production,
strategy, match play and good sportsmanship.
Our teaching philosophy is that tennis is
a game best learned in an atmosphere of
fun and enjoyment rather than one of
military discipline. Accordingly, we place
students in groups by ability
first, then by age. The goal
is keeping students challenged
and motivated, while being
particularly careful to avoid
situations where they are
overmatched or undermatched
and thus frustrated.
Daily Schedule
Our daily schedule features a minimum of
four hours of small group tennis instruction.
This includes exercise, fast-paced
drills, points, games, match play, and
demonstrations. More playing time is possible
during free time and evening activities.
Dances, movies, and other sports round out the
evening entertainment. Off-campus fun includes
field trips to the beach, the
Monterey Bay Aquarium, or
nearby Carmel. On
Saturday night
campers return to the
dorms at 10:30 PM
with lights out at
11:00. On Sundays
transportation will be
provided to area
church services
(optional), other field trips and special
activities to be determined.
Video
Equipment
Video equipment
is used as a teaching element to help analyze
strengths and
weaknesses in
each student’s
stroke production
and overall
approach to the
game. Ball
machines and
other instructional
tennis equipment
will also be
on site to optimize
learning. By being able to see their individual game style and technique during on-court video replays, campers are able to quickly understand what areas of the game they excel in and what areas need improvement..
Camp
Safety and Rules
The school infirmary will be staffed by a nurse.
Should serious emergencies arise, the Community
Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula is only minutes
away. In
addition to
learning
sportsmanship
on the
court, it is
expected that
all campers
will be wellbehaved
and
abide by
camp rules. Therefore, drug, alcohol, or tobacco use
is strictly forbidden. Campers using or possessing
any of these items will be expelled and sent home
immediately with no tuition refund. Similarly, those
campers whose behavior has
been deemed disruptive and
detrimental to the orderly
functioning of the camp will
be expelled without refund.
